About
About
Around 1900, the idea of freedom drove a generation to question bourgeois norms, industrial society, and capitalist structures. Many sought alternative ways of living — founding reform colonies outside the cities and pursuing a life aligned with nature, health, physical culture, and spirituality. These ambitions shaped not only new social models, but also a distinct aesthetic language that forms the conceptual backbone of the exhibition Para-Modernism at the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn.
In collaboration with artist Olaf Nicolai, we developed a dynamic color system that transforms the monumental architecture of the Bundeskunsthalle into an immersive spatial experience. Flowing color gradients extend across walls and rooms, structuring the exhibition into eight thematic chapters and guiding visitors through the space.
The gradual transitions between colors reflect the exhibition’s spiritual and esoteric spectrum while simultaneously functioning as a clear orientation system — both within the exhibition architecture and throughout the accompanying catalogue.
Contrasting the atmospheric softness of the color gradients, a bold typographic key visual introduces each chapter. Expressive letterforms dissolve into patterned textures, visually negotiating the tension between structure and dissolution — between order, idealism, and the desire for transformation.
Together, color and typography form a cohesive visual language that seamlessly connects physical space and printed media, translating complex historical ideas into a clear, contemporary, and spatially grounded design system.
